Antarābhava: Existence in interval

In this work in progress, Kinnari Vora explores humanity's relationship to death. Inspired by the Bardo philosophy - the state of intermediate existence between lives on earth in Tibetan Buddhism, her family’s traditions and rituals, and contrasted by the fear, denial and chaos related to death in modern society, she intends to study the topic using her most natural state: through the medium of traditional Indian and contemporary dance and performance art.

“Let us deprive death of its strangeness, let us frequent it, let us get used to it; let us have nothing more common in mind than death….we so not know where death awaits us so let us wait for it everywhere. A man who has learned how to die has unlearned how to be a slave.”

-The Tibetan book of living and dying by Sogyal Rinpoche

Delve Showcase

Catch us at Delve Showcase as we present new work titled “Sparsh”. Co-choreographed by Kinnari Vora and Tuli Bera, they will be exploring physicality within the Bharatanatyam dance form.

In South Indian Classical dance of Bharatanatyam, there is lack of physical touch. Dancers may hold hands, or tap on other dancers’ shoulder very briefly. Various emotions may be conveyed through gestures, body language and facial expressions. Yet, bodily contact is not commonly seen in traditional pieces. Influenced by Contemporary dance and contact improvisation, “Sparsh” explores the sensory aspects of touch in a traditional Bharatanatyam piece.

Sarmishtha Sarkar took her first step into Bharat Natyam at a very early age. Under the able tutelage of teachers like Padmashri Guru Chattuni Panicker and Guru Pathagudy Ramaswamy, the formative years of her life were steeped in the vigorous training required to perfect the art form.

Dancing soon became an intense passion with her and it led her to become closely associated with the renowned Mrinalini Sarabhai’s Darpana Academy of Performing Arts. Her association with the Academy spanned almost two decades. From being a young student learning under the Gurus in the academy, she went on to become the lead dancer in their professional troupe.

Experiencing an urge to add more dimensions to her creativity she started her own classical dance school in 1996, in Ahmedabad, “Aavirbhaav School of Creative Arts”. The school has been training students in Bharata Natyam and grooming them into professional dancers. Aavirbhaav which has over the years trained over hundred students provides facility for the students to graduate in Bharata Natyam. It also provides advance training courses for those interested in pursuing the art further and provides training for teachers in the same field. The deserving students of the school are given a platform to perform with the more experienced and senior dancers of the institution. The performing group of the school has been performing extensively in the country and abroad. The school is frequently invited to participate in cultural programs organized by the cultural department of the Gujarat Government.

Ishti presents

SARMISHTHA SARKAR in "Durdhara: The Unstoppable"

Don't miss this riveting performance on Amba, heroine of the Mahabharata, who's misfortunes in life result in feelings of revenge to destroy the great Bhishma!

Dancing soon became an intense passion with her and it led her to become closely associated with the renowned Mrinalini Sarabhai’s Darpana Academy of Performing Arts for two decades. Experiencing an urge to add more dimensions to her creativity she started her own classical dance school in 1996, in Ahmedabad, “Aavirbhaav School of Creative Arts”.

Sarmishtha’s choreographic presentations encompass pure classical pieces in the Bharat Natyam style and also experiment with the fusion of the classical, contemporary and folk styles, which result in a unique, creative portrayal of the merging of diverse artistic endeavors. Using dance as a medium of expression, she has created several dance pieces related to topical, environment and social issues.
